Merrell started skating at the age of nine and won her first important title, the Southern regional junior girls speed skating championship, when she was fourteen. She went on to win a record six national seniors titles, from 1959 through 1961 and in 1964, 1966, and 1967.
The wife of Grady Merrell, who coached U. S. roller skating teams in the 1980 and 1981 world championships, she has a daughter, Diane, national junior girls speed skating champion in 1975, and a son, Grady Jr., who won the national artistic skating title in 1977.
