Michalske, "Mike" (August M.)
Football
b. April 24, 1903, Cleveland, OH
d. Oct. 26, 1983
After starring at guard for two years at Penn State, Michalske was moved to fullback in 1925, his senior season. He scored both his team's touchdowns in a 13-6 victory over Michigan State.
Michalske was back at guard with the New York Yankees of the American Football League in 1926. The league folded after that season and the Yankees moved into the NFL. When the team disbanded after the 1928 season, Michalske joined the Green Bay Packers. He was one of their outstanding players when they won three consecutive NFL championships in his first three seasons.
He was named to unofficial All-Pro teams in 1929 and 1930 and was the left guard on the first official All-Pro team in 1931. Michalske was named an All-Pro right guard in 1935. The 6-foot, 210-pounder was strong, fast, and a very intelligent defender who was particularly good at rushing the passer. He retired in 1936 but returned to the Packers for one more season, in 1937.
Michalske coached Iowa State from 1942 through 1946, winning 18 games while losing 18 and tying 3.
