Milstead, Century A.
Football
b. Jan. 1, 1900, Rock Island, IL
d. June 1, 1963
Milstead got his unusual first name because of his birth date, since his father had the common misconception that the new century began in 1900, not 1901. After starring at tackle for Wabash, IN, College in 1921, he transferred to Yale.
The 6-foot-4, 220-pounder had to sit out a season before becoming eligible for football, but he got into a scrimmage against the varsity before the 1922 Princeton game and threw the ball carrier for consecutive losses of 5 and 10 yards, then was ordered to the sidelines so he wouldn't hurt anyone.
As a senior in 1923, Milstead helped lead Yale to an 8-0-0 record and was named an All-American.
Milstead played for the NFL's New York Giants in 1925, then joined the Philadelphia Quakers of the new American Football League. The AFL folded after only one season and Milstead then returned to the Giants for two more seasons.
