Moffat, Alexander
Football
b. Sept. 27, 1862, New York, NY
d. Feb. 23, 1914
Moffat was never named an All-American simply because he played at Princeton from 1881 through 1883, before there were All-American teams. In an era when kicking was pre-eminent, he was the best kicker in football. Amos Alonzo Stagg credited him with inventing the spiral punt in 1881, and Moffat could also drop-kick with either foot.
In a 26-7 win over Harvard in 1883, Moffat kicked four field goals, two with his left foot and two with his right foot. He also kicked a conversion after touchdown. Moffat kicked 16 field goals and 7 extra points that season, in addition to scoring 7 touchdowns, as he captained Princeton to a 7-1-0 record. During his 3 seasons, he had a total of 36 field goals.
