Originally a quarter horse jockey, Molter outgrew that occupation and became a trainer in 1935. He led the nation in winners saddled four consecutive years, from 1946 through 1949, setting a record of 155 in 1947, and he led trainers in winnings in 1954, 1956, 1958, and 1959.
Molter trained Determine, who won the 1954 Kentucky Derby, and Round Table, horse of the year in 1958. During his career, he saddled 2,160 winners and won $11,983,635 in purses.
