A football and track star at Carson-Newman College in Tennessee, Moore graduated in 1917. He was football coach at Mercer College in Georgia from 1925 through 1927.
In 1935, Moore took over as football and track coach at Louisiana State University and he was very successful in both roles. His football teams won 83 games, lost 39, and tied 6 in 13 seasons, but lost three straight in the Sugar Bowl: 3-2 to Texas Christian in 1936, 21-14 to Santa Clara in 1937, and 6-0, again to Santa Clara, in 1938. The 1936 team went undefeated, winning 9 regular season games and tying 1.
Moore's track teams won 9 of the first 10 Southeastern Conference championships. In 1933, he drove five athletes in his car to Chicago, where his team won the NCAA outdoor championship. Moore left coaching in 1947 to become SEC commissioner.
