Moore, "Dickie" (Richard W.)
Hockey
b. Jan. 6, 1931, Montreal, Quebec
Although he had chronic problems with both legs because of an accident suffered in childhood, Moore played in the NHL for fourteen seasons and led the league in scoring twice.
He joined the Montreal Canadiens during the 1951-52 season, but was little more than a supporting player on that star-laden team until the 1957-58 season. Rocket Richard and Jean Beliveau both missed much of the season with injuries and Moore stepped forward to become a leader.
Playing the last five weeks with a cast on his wrist, he won the Ross Trophy as the league's scoring champion with 84 points. The following season, he set an NHL record with 96 points and was named first-team all-star left wing for the second year in a row.
Moore was traded to the Toronto Maple Leafs in 1964. After one season in Toronto, he sat out a year, then went to the expansion St. Louis Blues for his final season. In 719 regular season games, he had 262 goals and 347 assists, with 46 goals and 64 assists in 135 playoff games. Moore tied an NHL playoff record with 6 points, on 2 goals and 4 assists, against Boston in a 1954 Stanley Cup game.
