Moore, Elisabeth H.
Tennis
b. March 5, 1876, Brooklyn, NY
d. Jan. 22, 1959
Moore began playing competitive tennis in the 1890s, when women played best three-out-of-five sets in major tournaments, as men still do. She once won a marathon match 4-6, 1-6, 9-7, 9-7, 6-3, and remarked afterward that her opponent "didn't have much strength left after the fourth set." The next day, she won another five-set match.
When the format was changed to best two-out-of-three for the U. S. national championship in 1902, Moore recorded that it was "to considerable expressed dissatisfaction of the leading women players, including myself."
Moore won national singles titles in 1896, 1901, 1903, and 1905. She teamed with Juliette P. Atkinson to win the women's doubles in 1896 and with Carrie B. Neely to win the title in 1903. Moore and Wylie C. Grant won the mixed doubles championship in 1902 and 1904.
