Moore, "Lenny" (Leonard E.)
Football
b. Nov. 25, 1933, Reading, PA
A running back at Penn State, the 6-foot-1, 198-pound Moore was the first draft choice of the NFL's Baltimore Colts in 1956. He went on to a remarkable 12-year career with the Colts, playing both at running back and at flanker, and he was one of the very best at both positions.
Moore was named rookie of the year after leading the league in yards per rushing attempt, 7.5, with 649 yards and 8 touchdowns on just 86 carries. When the Colts won the 1958 NFL championship, Moore had 1,633 combined yards, scored 14 touchdowns, and was named an All-Pro for the first time. In the overtime 23-17 championship win over the New York Giants, he caught 6 passes for 101 yards.
In 1961, Moore was moved from flanker to split end and his production dropped. Injuries limited him to only seven games in 1963, but he rebounded with one of his finest seasons in 1964, when he set an NFL record by scoring 20 touchdowns.
An All-Pro from 1958 through 1961 and in 1964, Moore played in seven Pro Bowls. He retired after the 1967 season with 363 receptions for 6,039 yards, a 16.6 average, and 42 touchdowns. He carried the ball 1,069 times for 5,174 yards, a 4.8 average, and 63 touchdowns, and he also returned 49 kickoffs for 1,180 yards, a 24.1 average, and 1 touchdown.
