Morley, William
Football
b. 1877, Socorro Datil, NM
d. May 27, 1932
Columbia University dropped football in 1892. When the sport was revived in 1899, the school had an 8-3-0 record, including its first victory over Yale, led by the "chain lightning backfield" that had Morley and Harold Weekes at halfback.
The 5-foot-10, 165-pound Morley was most noted because of his blocking for the speedy Weekes, but he was also a hard, slashing runner. He was named to Walter Camp's All-America team in 1900 and was a third-team selection in 1901.
After graduating, Morley became Columbia's football coach. He had a 26-11-4 record in four seasons before returning to his native New Mexico to work as a mining engineer.
