Murphy, Charles C. ("Stretch")
Basketball
b. April 10, 1907, Marion, IN
d. Aug. 24, 1992
One of college basketball's first really tall players at 6-foot-6, Murphy's defense and rebounding ability keyed the Purdue fast break that led to some unusually high scores for the era, such as a 60-14 victory over Ohio State. He could also score. In the 1928-29 season, he set Western Conference (Big Ten) records with 26 points in a game and 143 for the conference season.
He was Purdue's first three-time All-American, from 1928 through 1930. In his senior year, he captained the team and, with sophomore guard John Wooden, led the school to an undefeated season and the Western Conference championship.
