Murray, R. Lindley
Tennis
b. Nov. 3, 1892, San Francisco, CA
d. Jan. 17, 1970
A 1914 graduate of Stanford University, Murray played tennis competitively only part-time because of his job as an engineer. A left-hander, he won the 1917 "Patriotic" tournament, a World War I substitute for the national championship.
In 1918, he began practicing just eight days before the re-instated national tournament and beat Bill Tilden in the final match. He was eliminated 1919 quarter-finals and played only rarely after that.
Tall and slender at 6-foot-1½ and 155 pounds, Murray was a strong, accurate volleyer who liked to rush the net behind his sharp-breaking serve.
