Newell, Marshall
Football
b. April 2, 1871, Clifton, NJ
d. Dec. 24, 1897

At Harvard, Newell was called "Ma," partly because it was an abbreviation of his first name but mostly because he took younger students and players under his wing. He was only 5 feet, 7 inches tall, but he was a solid 168 pounds, and he was named an All-American tackle four times, from 1890 through 1893.
Newell also rowed on the Harvard crew. After graduating, he became Cornell's first football coach, winning 9 games, losing 8, and tying 2 in his two seasons there. He then became a track inspector for the Boston-Maine Railroad. He was killed when a locomotive hit him while he was on the job.
One of the entrances to Harvard Stadium is named for him.
