Harry Newman

An All-American quarterback at the University of Michigan in 1932, the 5-foot-7, 170-pound Newman joined the NFL's New York Giants in 1933 and was named to the All-Pro team after completing 53 of 136 passes for 973 yards and 9 touchdowns to lead the league. Newman threw touchdown passes of 29 and 8 yards in New York's 23-21 loss to the Chicago Bears in the NFL championship game.

After losing their first two games in 1934, Newman and the Giants won six of the next seven to take over the division lead. The final game of that stretch was a 17-3 win over the Green Bay Packers in which Newman gained 114 yards on 38 carries. The following week, though, Newman suffered two broken vertebrae in a 10-9 loss to the Bears and he missed the rest of the season.

Because of the injury, he decided to retire. The Giants talked him into returning midway through the 1935 season, but the injury limited his effectiveness.

That was his last season in the NFL. Newman played with the New York Yanks and Brooklyn Tigers of the American Football League in 1936 and ended his career with the AFL's Rochester Tigers in 1937.
