Known as the "Pembroke Peach" because he was such a smooth player, Nighbor became a professional with Toronto in 1913, played for the Vancouver Millionaires when they won the Stanley Cup in 1914, then went to the Ottawa Senators. They were then in the National Hockey Association, which was reorganized as the National Hockey League in 1917.
An expert at stealing the puck, Nighbor won the first Hart Trophy as the league's most valuable player in 1924 and he was the first winner of the Lady Byng Trophy for combining skillful play with gentlemanly conduct in 1925. He also won the Byng Trophy in 1926.
Nighbor played for Stanley Cup champions with Ottawa in 1920, 1921, 1923, and 1927. He was traded to the Toronto Maple Leafs during the 1928-29 season and retired when the season ended.
In 13 NHL seasons, Nighbor played 348 games, scored 135 goals and had 61 assists. He had 11 goals and 9 assists in 36 playoff games.
