North, Andy
Golf
b. May 9, 1950, Thorp, WI
In an injury-plagued career, North had only three victories on the PGA tour, but two of them came in the U. S. Open. North joined the tour in 1973. His first victory was in the 1977 Westchester Open.
In the 1978 U. S. Open, North led Jack Nicklaus by two shots after the second round, and had a one-shot lead over Gary Player after three rounds. The final round was anti-climactic: North shot a 74 but won as Player dropped out of contention with a 77.
North shot a 65 in the second round of the 1985 Open after an opening 70, but still trailed T. C. Chen by one stroke. He shot a 70 in the third round and was two strokes back. The fourth round was a four-player contest among Chen, North, Dave Barr, and Payne Stewart, with a the lead changing on almost every hole. North hit his tee shot into a bunker on the par-three 17th hole, but made a great sand shot to within four feet of the pin and sank the putt to take the lead and, eventually, the victory.
