Notter, Joseph A.
Horse Racing
b. June 21, 1890, Brooklyn, NY
d. April 10, 1973
Something of a specialist at riding two-year-olds because of his easy riding style and ability to evaluate horses, Notter won the Hopeful Stakes, a juvenile race, three times. One of his winners in that race was the filly Regret, in 1914.
Notter persuaded trainer Jimmy Rowe to enter Regret in the 1915 Kentucky Derby and she led all the way to win. She was the only filly to win that prestigious race until Genuine Risk in 1980.
His only other victory in a triple crown race came aboard Colin in the 1908 Belmont. Notter led jockeys in winnings that year with a record $464,322.
In 1923, Notter retired from riding with 56 major stakes victories and became a successful trainer. Notter later served as a racing official.
