Nunes was trained in Italy by Beppe Nadi and won the Rome epee championship in 1914, shortly before coming to the United States. He won the U. S. national epee title in 1917, 1922, 1924, 1926, 1928, and 1932, the saber championship in 1922, 1926, and 1929, and the foil championship in 1924.
In 1928, Nunes was the winner of the President's medal as the top scorer in three-weapon competition.
