From 1912 through 1924, Osburn won a total of 11 Olympic medals, including 5 golds, 4 silvers, and 2 bronzes, in target shooting.

A 1906 graduate of the U. S. Naval Academy, Osburn became a career officer, eventually rising to the rank of commander.

At the 1912 Olympics, Osburn won a gold medal as a member of the military rifle team; silvers in the military rifle, any position, and military rifle, three position; and bronze medals as a member of the small-bore rifle, prone, team and the running deer single shot team.

The 1916 Olympics were canceled because of World War I, but Osburn came back to win four gold medals in 1920. He won individual medals in the military rifle, standing, and in the military rifle, 300- and 600-meter, prone, and he was also a member of the winning free rifle team and the military rifle 300-meter, prone, team. Osburn won a silver medal as a member of the military rifle, standing, team.

In 1924, Osburn won his twelfth medal, a silver, in the free rifle.
