Pearce was undefeated in three years as a high school wrestler in Cushing, Oklahoma, and he got to the semifinals of the U. S. Olympic trials in 1928, his senior year.
Then he went on to Oklahoma A & M University (now Oklahoma State), where he had a 60-4-1 record and won the 1931 NCAA wrestling championship in the 125½-pound class. He was also the AAU champion in 1930 and 1931.
Pearce won a gold medal in the bantamweight class at the 1932 Olympics. He was a professional wrestler from 1933 to 1937 and then coached wrestling at the high school and college levels.
