The 6-foot, 192-pound Perranoski joined the NL's Los Angeles Dodgers as a left-handed relief pitcher in 1961 and had the league's best winning percentage, .842, on a 16-3 record in 1963, when he also recorded 21 saves and a 1.67 ERA.
Traded to the Minnesota Twins in 1968, Perranoski led the AL with 31 saves in 1969 and 34 in 1970. He was traded to the Detroit Tigers during the 1971 season, went back to the Dodgers in 1972, and retired after appearing in 8 games for the AL's California Angels in 1973.
Perranoski was the Los Angeles pitching coach from 1981 through 1994. During his 13 major league seasons he had a 79-74 record with 179 saves and a 2.79 ERA.
