Perry, "Jim" (James E.)
Baseball
b. Oct. 30, 1936, Williamston, NC
A right-handed pitcher like his younger brother Gaylord, Perry had a 12-10 record in 1959, his first season with the Cleveland Indians, then had a league-leading 18 victories, .643 winning percentage, and 4 shutouts in 1960.
Arm trouble hampered him intermittently during the next several seasons. Cleveland traded him to the Minnesota Twins early in the 1963 season and he had just 54 victories from then through 1968. However, he went 20-6 with a 2.82 ERA in 1969, then won the Cy Young Award in 1970, when he led the league in victories with a 24-12 mark.
Perry spent two more seasons with Minnesota, went to the Detroit Tigers in 1973, and returned to Cleveland in 1974. He retired after going just 4-10 with Cleveland and the Oakland Athletics in 1975.
In 17 seasons, he had a 215-174 record with 32 shutouts and a 3.45 ERA. He struck out 1,576 hitters while walking 998 in 3,285 2/3 innings.
He and Gaylord are the only brothers to win Cy Young Awards. Gaylord won the American League award in 1972, the National League Award in 1978.
