Pinkston developed his diving skills at Stanford University before the NCAA swimming and diving championships were held. He won the AAU platform competition from 1920 through 1924 and was the 3-meter springboard champion at the 1921 indoor meet and the 1923 outdoor meet.

At the 1920 Olympics, Pinkston won a gold medal in the platform dive and a silver in the springboard. He won bronze medals in both events in 1924, when he met Elizabeth Becker. They were married the following year. retired from competition, Pinkston became her coach and she won her second gold medal in 1928.

He later served as coach and athletic director for the Detroit Athletic Club.
