Plumb won six medals at five different Olympics, a record for an American equestrian. He was a member of the winning three-day U. S. team in 1976 and 1984 and was on silver medal teams in 1964, 1968, and 1972. He also won an individual silver medal for the 1976 three-day event.
A 1962 graduate of the University of Maryland, Plumb won an individual gold at the 1977 Pan-American Games and was a member of the gold medal team in 1973 and 1977. He won an individual silver medal and a team gold medal in the 1974 world championships.
Plumb won the U. S. Equestrian Association's Leading Rider of the Year Award ten times.
