Poe, Arthur
Football
b. March 22, 1879, Baltimore, MD
d. April 15, 1951
One of five brothers who played football at Princeton, great-nephews of the writer Edgar Allen Poe, Arthur starred on teams that won 23 games while losing only 1 and tying 1 in 1898 and 1899. The 5-foot-7, 145-pound end ran 95 yards with a fumble recovery for a touchdown to defeat Yale, 6-0, in 1898. He also had an 80-yard touchdown against Navy and a 40-yard touchdown run against Brown.
In 1899, Poe drop-kicked the only field goal of his career from 35 yards to beat Yale 11-10. He was named an All-American after that season and the Helms Athletic Foundation retroactively named him player of the year.
The other brothers were Samuel J., who played at Princeton from 1880 through 1882; Edgar Allan, 1888 through 1890; John P. Jr., 1891 through 1892; and Neilson, 1894 through 1896.
