Pownall, Harry E. Sr.
Harness Racing
b. Oct. 30, 1902, Brooklyn, NY
d. Dec. 31, 1979
The son and grandson of harness racing drivers, Pownall began racing in 1919 and had his first winner in Goshen, NY, in July of 1920. His career began to flourish when he became assistant trainer to Billy Dickerson at Arden Homestead Stable in 1937. Pownall drove Titan Hanover to the first 2-minute mile ever by a 2-year-old harness horse in 1944, and they won the Hambletonian the following year.
After Dickerson's death in 1948, Pownall became the stable's head trainer. He won two other triple crown races, the 1950 Kentucky Futurity with Star's Pride and the 1967 Yonkers Futurity with Pomp. Among the other horses he developed and drove were Florican, Florlis, Sharpshooter, Tassel Hanover, and Matastar, who did a 1:55 4/5 at Lexington in 1962.
