A 6-foot-8, 220-pounder who can shoot from outside, Rice was named most valuable player in the 1989 NCAA tournament, when he scored 184 points in six games to lead the University of Michigan to the national championship.
He averaged 18.2 points per game in his four-year college career and 25.6 per game as a senior. The Miami Heat chose Rice in the first round of the 1989 NBA draft.
Rice was named to the NBA all-rookie second team after averaging 13.6 points a game in 1989-90. He spent six seasons with Miami, becoming the franchise's all-time leading scorer with 9,248 points, before being traded to the Charlotte Hornets before the 1995-96 season.
He played in the NBA All-Star Game each of his three seasons in Charlotte. In the 1997 game, he scored 26 points, setting records with 20 points in the third quarter and 24 in the second half, to be named MVP. Rice also won the Long Distance Shootout at the 1995 All-Star Game.
Since 1999, Rice has played for the Los Angeles Lakers, New York Knicks, Houston, Rockets and Los Angeles Clippers, missing large parts of three seasons with injuries. He announced his retirement after playing in just 18 games for the Clippers during the 2003-04 season.
Rice ranks third in NBA history with 1,554 three-point field goals made and his .402 three-point percentage is tied for 14th.
