Running for Notre Dame University, Rice won the NCAA 2-mile championship in 1937 and 1939. Undefeated in 65 consecutive races from late 1939 until June of 1943, Rice was the AAU outdoor 5,000-meter champion five years in a row, from 1938 through 1942, and he won the indoor championship four years in a row, from 1940 through 1943. He was also the AAU cross-country champion in 1941.
Rice won the Sullivan Award as the nation's outstanding amateur athlete in 1940, when he was undefeated through the U. S. season and on a European tour. He ran a world record 8:51.1 for the 2-mile in 1941.
