Riedel, Ernest
Canoeing
b. June 13, 1901
Riedel won a bronze medal in the 10,000-meter kayak singles event at the 1936 Olympics. The 1940 and 1944 Olympic Games were canceled because of World War II, which probably deprived him of more medals since he was at his peak during that period.
Riedel was the national kayak champion in 1930, 1931, 1932, 1935, 1937, 1938, 1940, 1941, 1946, 1947, and 1948 (there was no competition in 1942-45). He also won the canoeing championship in 1938. Competing for the Pendleton Canoe Club of Yonkers, Riedel was a member of the national two-man championship kayak team in 1930, 1938, 1941, 1946 and 1947; a member of the four-man canoe champion team in 1930, 1931, 1935, and 1937; and a member of the four-man kayak champion team in 1930, 1931, 1937, 1941, and from 1947 through 1949.
At the age of forty-seven, he competed in the 1948 Olympics but failed to qualify for the finals.
