Riley's academic and athletic career at Dartmouth College was interrupted by World War II. After three years in the service, he returned to Dartmouth to captain the hockey team in the 1946-47 season.
Riley played for the 1948 U. S. Olympic team and was player-coach of the 1949 national team that won a bronze medal at the world championships. He became head coach at the U. S. Military Academy in 1950, winning the Spencer Penrose Award as the nation's outstanding collegiate coach in 1957 and 1960.
Riley was best known as coach of the 1960 U. S. Olympic team that won a surprising gold medal by beating Czechoslovakia 9-4 after trailing 4-3 at the end of two periods.
He coached at Army through the 1985-86 season, when he was succeeded by his son, Rob. Riley had a record of 542-319-20 in his 36 seasons.
