A high school wrestling champion, the 5-foot-10, 200-pound Romig was an All-American guard at the University of Colorado in 1960 and 1961. Fast and very strong, Romig was an outstanding middle linebacker on defense and a bulldozing blocker as a pulling guard.
An outstanding student, Romig had a 3.87 grade point average at Colorado and was also a first-team Academic All-American twice. He passed up professional football to study at Oxford University on a Rhodes Scholarship. He then returned to the University of Colorado, where he received a doctorate in astrogeophysics. He currently teaches astronomy at his alma mater.
Colorado annual gives the Joe Romig Award to the football player who performs best during spring practice.
