Ross won three gold medals at the 1920 Olympics, in the 400- and 1,500-meter freestyle swims and as a member of the 4 by 200-meter relay team. He was the AAU national outdoor champion in the 440-yard in 1917, the 440-yard and 1-mile in 1920. Indoors, he won the 100-yard title in 1921, the 220-yard title in 1917, 1918, and 1921.
A Stanford graduate, Ross served in World War I, received a law degree from Northwestern University, and then became a sportswriter. Later, he went into broadcasting. He was the country's first classical music disc jockey with a radio station in Chicago, where he was known as "Uncle Normie." During World War II, he was an aide to General Jimmy Doolittle.
