Ryon entered the 1976 Olympic games after shooting a personal best 2,457 at the Olympic trials. Competing in her first international tournament, she coolly surpassed that with a 2,499 to win the gold medal.
She also won her second international tournament, the 1977 world championship, shooting a 2,515 to set a women's world record. Ryon was the U. S. national champion in 1976 and 1977.
