Schultz, David L.
Wrestling
b. June 6, 1959, Palo Alto, CA
d. Jan. 26, 1996
The national freestyle and Greco-Roman 163-pound champion in 1977, Schultz enrolled at Oklahoma State University that fall. He transferred to UCLA the following year after his brother Mark entered that school as a freshman and in 1979 they both transferred to the University of Oklahoma because UCLA had dropped wrestling.
The NCAA 163-pound champion in 1982, Schultz won the world championship in 1983 and the AAU national title in 1984. He easily won a gold medal at the 1984 Olympics, taking one match by a fall and winning the other five by a combined score of 42 to 2. A day later, Mark won the 180.5-pound championship.
Schultz won a bronze medal in the 1985 world championships and silver medals in 1986 and 1987, when he won another national title and also took the gold medal in his weight class at the Pan-American Games. He retired from competition after failing to make the 1988 Olympic team.
However, Schultz decided to make a comeback for the 1996 Olympics. He was coaching and training with Team Foxcatcher in Pennsylvania when he was shot to death by John E. DuPont, the team sponsor. DuPont was found guilty of third-degree murder.
