A basketball and football star in high school, Sholty began training and driving harness horses after graduating and got his first victory at Frankfort, Indiana, in 1951, driving a horse that his uncle had given him.
Sholty had more than 100 wins in a season in 1958 and then averaged more than 140 wins and $750,000 in purses for the next twenty years. His finest year was 1966, when he won two of the pacing triple crown races, the Little Brown Jug and Messenger Stake, with Romeo Hanover, and won one of the trotting triple crown events, the Yonkers Futurity, with Polaris.
During nearly forty years of driving, Sholty won 2,846 heats and had $19,950,727 in winnings.
