Siebert joined the Montreal Maroons for the 1925-26 season, when they won the Stanley Cup. He was the left wing on the "S Line" with center Nels Stewart and right wing Hooley Smith.
The Maroons traded Siebert to the New York Rangers in 1932 and they also won the Stanley Cup during his first season. there. He was traded to the Boston Bruins during the 1933-34 season.
In 1936, Cecil Hart took over as coach of the Montreal Canadiens and immediately traded for Siebert, moving him to defense. Despite playing a new position, Siebert won the 1937 Hart Trophy as the league's most valuable player.
Siebert retired as a player after the 1938-39 season and shortly afterward was hired to coach the Canadiens. But in August he drowned while vacationing with his family at St. Joseph, Ontario.
He was survived by his wife, who was partially paralyzed by complications that arose during childbirth, and two young daughters. The National Hockey League staged a benefit all-star game at the Montreal Forum that raised $15,000 for his family.
Siebert was a first-team All-Star defenseman three consecutive years, from 1936 through 1938.
