b. June 25, 1926, Anderson, IN
d. Dec. 9, 2003
After serving in the Navy during World War II, Sloan played guard at North Carolina State University and also won letters in football and track. He then coached Presbyterian College in South Carolina to a 69-36 record from 1951-52 through 1954-55.
Sloan spent a year as an assistant coach before taking over at The Citadel, where he had a 57-38 mark from 1956-57 through 1959-60.
He became head coach at his alma mater in 1960 and gradually rebuilt a winning program. His 1972-73 team won all 27 of its regular season games but couldn't compete in the NCAA tournament because it was on probation. However, Sloan's squad won the 1974 NCAA championship after losing only one regular season game. He was named coach of the year by the Associated Press and the Basketball Writers' Association of America.
In 14 seasons with the Wolfpack, Sloan had a 266-127 record and won three Atlantic Coast Conference championships. He went to the University of Florida in 1980. Under Sloan's guidance, the school made its first ever NCAA tournament appearance in 1987. Florida also made the tournament in 1988 and 1989.
Because of recruiting violations, the school was put on probation in 1992 and Sloan resigned under pressure. He had a 627-393 record for a .615 winning percentage.
