Stanfel, "Dick" (Richard A.)
Football
b. July 20, 1927, San Francisco, CA
An All-American guard at the University of San Francisco in 1951, the 6-foot-3, 240-pound Stanfel was chosen by the Detroit Lions in the second round of the 1952 NFL draft.
Stanfel immediately became a starter on offense and his powerful run blocking and pass protecting helped the Lions win the 1953 NFL championship.
An All-Pro in 1953 and 1954, Stanfel was traded to the Washington Redskins in 1956. He spent three seasons with Washington, making All-Pro each year.
Stanfel retired after the 1958 season and became an assistant coach at Notre Dame. He has also been an assistant with several professional teams, most recently as offensive line coach for the Chicago Bears from 1981 through 1992. In 1980, Stanfel served as interim coach of the NFL's New Orleans Saints, where he had a 1-3-0 record.
Stanfel was selected for the Pro Bowl six times and he was named to the NFL's team of the decade for the 1950s.
