Stanfield, "Andy" (Andrew W.)
b. Dec. 29, 1927, Washington, DC
d. June 15, 1985

Running for Seton Hall University, Stanfield won the IC4A indoor 60-meter dash and outdoor 100-meter from 1949 through 1951. He was also the outdoor 200-meter champion in 1949 and 1951. Stanfield won both sprints at the AAU national outdoor meet in 1949 and he was the IC4A indoor long jump titlist in 1951.
Because of a series of leg injuries, he began to concentrate on the 200-meter/220-yard dash late in 1951. Stanfield set a world record for both distances, around a turn, of 20.6 seconds on May 5, 1951. He tied that record at the 1952 Olympic trials.
At the Helsinki Games, Stanfield won the 200-meter, tying Jesse Owens' Olympic record of 20.7 seconds, and he also ran on the gold medal 4 by 100-meter relay team. Stanfield won the AAU 200-meter title in 1952 and 1953 and was the silver medalist in the event at the 1956 Olympics. He then retired from competition.
