Stenerud, Jan
Football
b. Nov. 26, 1942, Festund, Norway
The first (and still the only) kicking specialist inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame, Stenerud came to the United States on a skiing scholarship from Montana State University. Because of his ability to kick a football soccer style, he also played football and set was then an NCAA record with a 59-yard field goal in 1965.
Stenerud joined the AFL's Kansas City Chiefs as a soccer-style kicker in 1967, when he led the league with 21 field goals. In 1969, he kicked 16 field goals in a row, a record at the time.
Stenerud remained with the Chiefs through the 1979 season and then joined the Green Bay Packers. He kicked 22 field goals in 24 attempts for the Packers in 1981, setting an NFL record for accuracy with 91.7 percent. Stenerud ended his career with the Minnesota Vikings in 1984 and 1985.
In 1999, Stenerud was selected as the kicker on the NFL's 75th Anniversary Team.
