1974 - Aaron Wastes No Time Breaking Ruth's Record
In his first trip to the plate before the home crowd in Atlanta, Henry Aaron broke Babe Ruth's career record by hitting his 715th home run off Los Angeles Dodger lefty Al Downing. He had had tied the record in his first at-bat of the season, in Cincinnati.

1975 - Robinson the Player Helps Robinson the Manager
Making his debut as the first black manager in the major leagues, Frank Robinson wisely put himself in the lineup as designated hitter. He hit a home run to help Cleveland take a 5-3 win over the Yankees.

1980 - Potvin Scores Short-Handed Twice in One Period
Defenseman Denis Potvin of the New York Islanders tied an NHL playoff record by scoring two short-handed goals in one period against the Los Angeles Kings.

1993 - Baerga Switch-Hits Homers in One Inning
Second baseman Carlos Baerga of the Cleveland Indians hit two home runs in one inning, one from each side of the plate. No other major-leaguer has done it.

1995 - McCall, Seldon Both Win Heavyweight Titles
There were two heavyweight championship fights on this date. Oliver McCall won a 12-round decision over Larry Holmes to win the WBC title and Bruce Seldon scored a 7th-round TKO ove Tony Tucker to win the WBA version.
