1947 - Durocher Hit with One-Year Suspension

Baseball Commissioner Happy Chandler suspended Brooklyn Dodger manager Leo Durocher for a year because Durocher refused to stop associating with known gamblers. Coach Burt Shotton took over and the Dodgers won the pennant.

1965 - Mantle Hits First Indoor Home Run

Mickey Mantle hit the major leagues' first indoor home run as the Yankees beat the Houston Astros, 2-1, in the first game played at the Astrodome, an exhibition.

1978 - Thompson, Gervin Combine for 136 Points

It was a great day for scoring in the NBA, as David Thompson hit 73 points for the Denver Nuggets and San Antonio's George Gervin scored 63 in separate games.

1987 - Gretzky's 7-Point Game Makes Him All-Time Leader

Wayne Gretzky had 7 points in a Stanley Cup game for the third time as his Edmonton Oilers beat the Los Angeles Kings, 13-3. That made Gretzy the NHL's all-time playoff scoring leader.

 

1989 - Hoch Blows 2-Footer and Masters

Scott Hoch only needed to make a 2-foot putt on the first hole of a playoff with Nick Faldo to win the Masters championship. But he blew it and Faldo then sank a 25-footer for a birdie on the second hole to win the title.
