1910 - President Taft Starts a Tradition
William Howard Taft started a presidential tradition by throwing out the first ball before the Washington Senators' opener against the Philadelphia Athletics.

1911 - Johnson Strikes Out 4 in an Inning
Walter Johnson of the Senators tied a major league record by striking out four hitters in an inning. (One of them reached base when the third strike got away from the catcher.)

1947 - Robinson Breaks Baseball Color Barrier
Jackie Robinson was hitless in three at-bats but scored the deciding run as the Brooklyn Dodgers beat the Boston Braves, 5-3. He was the first black major league player.

1998 - Unique Doubleheader at Shea Stadium
The Mets and Yankees teamed for a unique doubleheader at Shea Stadium. The Yankees beat the Angels, 3-2, in an afternoon game and the Mets beat the Cubs, 2-1, that night. Yankee Stadium had been closed temporarily because of structural problems.
