1897 - McDermott Wins First Boston Marathon

Inspired by seeing the event at the 1896 Olympics in Athens, members of the Boston Athletic Association conducted a marathon on Patriot's Day, a Massachusetts holiday. John McDermott of New York City won in a time of 2:55:10.

1981 - Baseball's Longest Game Is Suspended

After 32 innings, the game between the Pawtucket Red Sox and Rochester Red Wings was suspended at 4:07 a.m. with the scored tied, 2-2. Pawtucket won, 3-2, in the 33rd inning when the game was finally resumed on June 23.

1986 -Spinks Beats Holmes Again

In a rematch of the fight in which Michael Spinks won the heavyweight championship, he won a 15-round split decision over Larry Holmes to retain the title.

1991 - Holyfield Wins Decision Over Foreman

Evander Holyfield won a unanimous 12-round decision against George Foreman at Atlantic City to win general recognition as heavyweight champion.
