1901 - Tigers Rally with 10 in the Ninth
Detroit hosted its first major league game, and a lot of fans probably left early because the Tigers were losing, 13-4, in the bottom of the ninth. But they scored 10 runs to win, 14-13.

1950 - Cooper Is NBA's First Black Draft Choice
Chuck Cooper, a former Duquesne All-American playing for the Harlem Globetrotters, was selected by the Boston Celtics in the second round of the NBA draft. Cooper was the first black player to be drafted and became the first to play in the NBA.

1974 - NFL Goes for Sudden Death
NFL owners voted to adopt a 15-minute, sudden-death quarter if a regular season game ends in a tie after the regulation four quarters. In the hope of increasing touchdowns at the expense of field goals, they also agreed to move the goalposts from the goal line to the end line.

1989 - That's Why They Call Him Super Mario
"Super Mario" Lemeiux of the Pittsburgh Penguins tied Tim Kerr's NHL playoff record by scoring 4 goals in the first period of Pittsburgh's 10-7 over the Flyers.
