1947 - America and Japan Honor Babe Ruth
Babe Ruth Day was celebrated not only at Yankee Stadium, but at ballparks throughout the United States and Japan. Suffering from terminal throat cancer, Ruth gave an emotion-laden speech to New York fans.

1956 - Marciano Retires Undefeated
Heavyweight champion Rocky Marciano announced his retirement from boxing. With a 49-0 professional record, he was the only heavyweight titlist to retire undefeated.

1983 - Ryan Becomes All-Time Strikeout Leader
Nolan Ryan collected his 3,509th career strikeout to break Walter Johnson's long-standing record. Ryan wasn't even close to being finished; when he retired after the 1993 season, he had a total of 5,712 Ks.

1968 - Ellis Wins Vacant Heavyweight Title
In the final match of an eight-boxer elimination tournament, Jimmy Ellis won a 15-round decision over Jerry Quarry at Oakland, California, to become heavyweight champion. The title had been stripped from Muhammad Ali for his refusal to accept induction into the military.
