1884 - Sherry Magee, switch-hitting outfielder who led the National League with a .331 average in 1910; in Clarendon, PA

 

1904 - Hank Iba, the only man to coach two Gold Medal basketball teams, in 1964 and 1968; in Easton, MO

 

1906 - Ken Strong, Pro Football Hall of Fame running back who was also one of the NFL's best kickers from 1929 until 1939; in West Haven, CT

 

1919 - Pauline Betz, who won the 1946 Wimbledon singles championship to go with her four U. S. titles; in Dayton, OH
1928 - Janice-Lee York Romary, who won six national fencing titles and was on six Olympic teams; in California

 

1960 - Dale Ellis, who scored more than 19,000 points in 18 NBA seasons; in Marietta, GA

 

1961 - Carol Norman, professional bowler who was the first woman to roll consecutive 300 games; in Ardmore, OK

 

1965 - David Robinson, center who was the NBA Rookie of the Year in 1990 and Most Valuable Player in 1995; in Key West, FL

1926 - Ederle Conquers English Channel

Gertrude Ederle became the first woman to swim the English Channel. Her time of 14 hours and 31 minutes broke the former record by more than 2 hours.

1952 - Paige Wins in 12 Innings at 47

At 47, the legendary Satchel Paige became the oldest pitcher ever to throw a complete game or a shutout. He even went 12 innings in Cleveland's 1-0 victory over the Detroit Tigers.

1986 - Rangers, Orioles Combined for 3 Slams

Toby Harrah hit a grand slam to give the Texas Rangers an early 5-0 lead, but the Baltimore Orioles countered with two of them in the 4th inning, by Larry Sheets and Jim Dwyer, to take a 9-5 lead. The Rangers scored seven runs in the last two innings to come away with a 13-11 win. It's the only time three grand slams have been hit in one game.

1991 - Consecutive Perfectos for Doom

Debbie Doom threw her second consecutive perfect game in the Pan-American Games softball tournament as the U. S. beat Nicaragua, 8-0.
