1915 - Obedience to Coach Costs Game
St. Louis had the bases loaded against Brooklyn pitcher Ed Appleton with the score tied 4-4 and two in the seventh inning. Miller Huggins, the third base coach, suddenly called for the baseball and Appleton obediently tossed it to him. Huggins stepped aside, the ball rolled to the dugout, and a run scored while the other two runners moved up. St. Louis went on to win, 6-4.

1983 - Waitz Wins First Women's World Marathon
The first women's marathon world championship was held in Helsinki, Finland. Grete Waitz of Norway was the winner.

1991 - Last-Minute Entry Daly Wins PGA
Although he entered at the last minute and didn't have a chance for a practice round on the course, John Daly won the PGA Championship, beating Bruce Lietzke by three shots.
