1925 - MSG Opens With Hockey Game
New Madison Square Garden (the third) opened in New York City with a capacity crowd of 17,000 watching the NHL's New York Americans losing, 3-1, to the Montreal Canadiens. Tex Rickard, better known as a boxing promoter, built the garden and owned the Americans.

1973 - Hawley Rides 500th Winner
Jockey Sandy Hawley rode Charlie Jr. to victory at Maryland's Laurel Race Course, becoming the first rider to have 500 winners in a year.

1974 - Catfish Becomes Free Agent
Arbitrator Peter Seitz ruled that pitcher Catfish Hunter was a free agent because the Oakland As hadn't bought him an insurance policy, as required in Hunter's contract. The decision left Hunter free to negotiate with any major league teams. He eventually signed a five-year, $3.75 million deal with the Yankees, the largest contract in MLB history at that time.
