1877 - Herman "Germany" Schaefer, colorful major-leaguer who forced a change in baseball rules by stealing first base from second; in Chicago

1964 - McDermott Is Surprise Olympic Winner

Using a pair of skates he borrowed from his coach, Leo Freisinger, and wearing a good luck pin from Mrs. Freisinger, Terry McDermott won a gold medal in the 500-meter speed skating event. It was the only gold medal won by the United States at Innsbruck.

1987 - Conner, Stars and Stripes Bring Cup Back

Skippered by Dennis Conner, Stars and Stripes won its fourth straight race against Australia's Kookaburra 3 to return the America's cup to the United States.

1991 - "Pete Rose Rule" Unanimously Adopted

The Baseball Hall of Fame board of directors voted unanimously in favor of the "Pete Rose rule," which bars induction to any person banned from baseball.

1997 - Lemieux Scores 600th Goal in 719th Game

Mario LeMieux scored into an empty net late in Pittsburgh's 6-4 win over the Vancouver Canucks to become the seventh player in NHL history with 600 career goals. It was LeMieux's 719th game.
